Washingtonia Filifera

In our nursery we have copies of Washingtonia filifera in a pot with a trunk height from 1 meter to 3-4 meters. This species probably hybridizes with the Mexican fan palm (Washingtonia robusta), giving rise to specimens of intermediate characteristics.

Its growth rate is average compared to its sister the robust Washingtonia. It can reach a height of 20 meters. The trunk is very thick, about 60-80 cm in diameter and 1 meter at the base, which gives the palm a robust and powerful appearance being widely used in gardening to decorate the parks and avenues, being the central decorative element from any garden

The leaves are fan-shaped claps, divided up to almost a third into long, hanging segments, with filamentous edges. Petioles are heavily armed with thorns. The trunk can remain covered by dead leaves almost indefinitely if they are not removed by pruning.

The inflorescences are arched, hanging and branched, with creamy and fragrant hermaphrodite flowers. It blooms according to the place between late spring and summer. The average age of these palm trees is 180-200 years.

It is one of the most cultivated palm species in the world and one of the most suitable species for coastal areas and inland areas with mild climate. Tolerates all types of soils, even the very poor, preferring fertile and well drained soils. Excess moisture can rot the palm. It has a high resistance to wind, drought and salinity.
