Chamaerops Humilis

In our nursery and various plantations we have a wide variety of shapes and sizes of Chamaerops humilis, both in root ball and pot, from specimens formed by 2-3 arms to others formed by 7-8 arms and with trunk heights up to 4 -5 meters forming exemplary tree structures that can be used as the main decorative element of any garden or park.

It grows in arid and dry areas, generally close to the coast, being the only species of native palm of the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands and is one of the most representative elements of the Mediterranean vegetation of the southwest of Europe.

It has a slow growth and a bushy bearing formed by a main trunk and several branches that are born from the base of it, being able to reach heights of 4-5 meters. The leaves of about 50-80 cm in diameter are webbed and very rigid with thin petioles loaded with lateral spines.

It is a dioecious species with separate male and female specimens. The inflorescences, between 15-20 cm long, are born at the end of the trunks, between the leaves. The fruits are fleshy, ovoid, reddish yellow, 2-3 cm in diameter. They have a high content of butyric acid with nutritional properties and is used as an antidiarrheal and astringent

The Chamaerops humilis has a great ornamental value and is used in gardening for its resistance and rusticity. Very used in rockery gardens for not reaching a great height like other palm trees and to form hedges or thorny bushes that impede the passage.

Its ecological value lies in its great resistance to drought. Its fruits serve as food for many native species and its spiny density is used as a refuge for the breeding of many animal species.
